A CONLACTRAHO delegation participated in the International Labor Conference

Geneva, June 2025 – At the 113th International Labor Conference organized by the Internation Labor Organisation, the Latin American and Caribbean Confederation of Domestic Workers (CONLACTRAHO), implementing partner of the FAME project, reaffirmed its commitment to defending the labor rights of more than 14 million domestic workers in the region.

During its participation, the CONLACTRAHO delegation, composed of Cleide Silva Pereira, CONLACTRAHO General Secretary; Juanita Collado, Deputy Secretary for Minutes and Archives; Aida Evelyn Rosales, Deputy Secretary for Organization, held strategic meetings with the National Confederation of Trade Union Unity (CNUS), one of the main trade union confederations in the Dominican Republic, as well as with the Dominican Minister of Labor, Eddy Olivares. These opportunities for dialogue allowed for an analysis of the current situation of domestic workers in Latin America and the Caribbean and highlighted the urgent need to move toward the effective implementation of ILO Conventions 189 and 190, which are fundamental to guaranteeing decent working conditions and environments free from violence and harassment.

Key demands for work with rights

CONLACTRAHO presented a series of priority demands aimed at raising awareness, protecting, and dignifying domestic work in all countries in the region. Among these, the following stand out:

  • Legal recognition and protection on platforms
  • Explicit inclusion in labor laws.
  • Implementation of ILO Convention 189 and ratification of Convention 190
  • Public policies for formalization
  • Subsidies and simplification for social security affiliation.
  • Universal access to social protection.
  • Training and access to labor justice without discrimination.
  • Full participation and digital literacy
  • Trade union inclusion in laws and policies.
  • Technology training programs with a gender focus.
  • Prevention of occupational hazards
  • Protection against physical, biological, and psychosocial hazards.
  • Access to occupational health and preventive measures.

A global call for respect for labor rights

CONLACTRAHO’s presence at this conference represents a collective, firm, and organized voice demanding that domestic work cease to be invisible and excluded from fundamental labor guarantees. At the same time, it is part of its link with the FAME project, since through its coordination, it strengthens its capacity for advocacy and reaffirms its role as a regional reference point in the defense of the labor rights of domestic workers, contributing to a global network that promotes a more just, inclusive, and violence-free economy.

We urge governments, employers, and civil society to adopt concrete measures to ensure that these rights are upheld. The fight for decent work is not the responsibility of any one party: it is a shared responsibility.

Our Call to Action:

From CONLACTRAHO, we strongly call on the governments of the region, companies (including, crucially, digital platforms), and society in general to recognize the dignity and incalculable value of our work. It is imperative to move from statements to concrete actions to eradicate informality, precariousness, and violence that we face every day.

Digital transformation must be a tool for inclusion and social justice, not for deepening the inequalities that have historically affected us.

For a future of work with social justice and gender equality for all domestic workers.
