Khulna, 25 November 2025
The global community today observed the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marking the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. In Bangladesh, the day was commemorated with a colourful and meaningful event jointly organized by PURNIMA, Sarbojanin Unnayan Sangstha (SUNS) and Nabodigonto Nari Unnayan Sangstha (NNUS) in Khulna.
The inauguration ceremony was held with the active participation of government officials, civil society members, development practitioners, and community representatives. The Deputy Commissioner of Khulna graced the occasion as the Chief Guest, while the Deputy Director of the Department of Women Affairs (DWA) attended as a Special Guest. Representatives from local NGOs, youth groups, journalists, and members of the general public were also present, alongside staff from the three organizing organizations.
The program began with a vibrant balloon release, symbolizing hope, freedom and a collective commitment to ending violence against women and girls. This was followed by a powerful human chain and a colourful awareness rally that moved through key parts of the city, drawing significant attention from pedestrians, students and local residents.

Speakers at the event highlighted that violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations in Bangladesh, often fueled by gender inequality, social stigma and limited access to justice. They emphasized that preventing violence requires a coordinated effort among government institutions, NGOs, communities and families. The need to create safe spaces for women both offline and online was strongly underlined.
The organizers reaffirmed that the 16 Days of Activism, beginning today, would include a series of awareness sessions, community dialogues, youth engagement activities, and advocacy events across Khulna and surrounding districts. These initiatives aim to strengthen public awareness, support survivors, and inspire community-led actions to eliminate gender-based violence.

The joint initiative by PURNIMA, Sarbojanin Unnayan Sangstha and Nabodigonto Nari Unnayan Sangstha demonstrates a strong commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and violence-free society. As the campaign moves forward, all three organizations call upon citizens, especially men and boys, to stand as allies in promoting dignity, respect, and equality for women and girls across Bangladesh.
